I need to find a special kind of therapist to work with me and my 17 year old kid, who has PTSD, and debilitating OCD.
For the last 7 years, I’ve been accommodating the compulsions/rituals, on and off (the OCD flares after traumatic situations/transitions), while myself experiencing similar trauma - fighting cancer, ICU stays, my older son’s addiction (now in Recovery x3 years), and the dissolution of my 20 year marriage. So, we are in deep. :(
I sometimes think I’m too traumatized to help my son, that I don’t have enough support - as things continue to get worse, the rituals and accommodations escalate, and yet here I am reaching out, again with hope that there is someone who can help us.
We need someone well-versed in PTSD and OCD, and trained in supporting a parent with SPACE Treatment.
I need a therapist who won’t talk to my very intelligent 17 year old like a baby, who will establish trust, be respectful and go slowly. Maybe even someone who will see me alone at first, and help me to start limiting my accommodations, and only be there for my son as a trauma-therapist, not push him into exposures right away (he has been “burned” by harsh ERP), just help him process and deal with the natural exposures that will happen from my limiting accommodations. Someone who will be understanding and gentle.
Does a person like this exist?
I live in Oregon and happy to have telehealth/zoom appts.
