Has anyone had experience choosing parental accommodations of device use in teens? This is coming up in several cases that I have (parents allowing excessive time on devices in general (where devices are used as avoidance of anxiety), excessive watching Netflix in bathroom, excessive social media use). Have gone route of parents implementing software with controls by time or specific to device or media/app type), or parents taking phone at specific times, parents putting in place rules and checking phone usage data, using family media plans etc. https://www.healthychildren.org/English/media/Pages/default.aspx

Thanks for the question and also for the links, Emily. It's always useful to distinguish between overuse of electronics for anxiety reduction and just general use of these devices, which is a problem obviously not limited to anxiety. I actually do find that setting these limits through apps etc. is useful because it removes the need to argue with the child or physically remove the device when the child is using it, which can lead to unhelpful escalation. I am curious to hear others' experiences in this area. It's certainly a problem faced by many parents.
